Well-known Serbian archaeologist and expert on the Serbian Middle Ages, Marko Popović, passed away in Belgrade.

Marko Popović was born in Užice in 1944, he studied in Belgrade, where he received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Archeology. The monograph Belgrade Fortress was published for the first time by the Institute of Archeology in 1982. The revised edition of Monography is financed by PE ‘Belgrade Fortress’ in 2006.

The complete portrayal of Belgrade Fortress’ history from the ancient times till 20th century is updated with new literature and knowledge gained during the period from 1982 till 2006, especially in the field of Roman military camp and new knowledge about the city gates.
